The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) recently released an advertising blitz targeting West Virginia Democrat Senator Joe Manchin. This campaign is an attempt by the GOP to discourage the senator who is popular in the highly conservative state from running for a third term by calling him “Maserati Manchin.” The ad also targets his attendance at the recent World Economic Forum at Davos, in Switzerland.
The NRSC digital advertisement attacks the senator for his luxurious lifestyle that includes ownership of a fancy car–Maserati and a luxury yacht. It also mentions the large restaurant bills that are a part of his lavish lifestyle as he dines at gourmet and fancy restaurants.
On Sunday, Sen. Joe Manchin appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press. He said that he has not yet made a decision on 2024. He added that he had two years ahead of him to do the best he could for his state and his country.
The Democrats need Joe Manchin’s vote to pass major climate provisions as well as paid family leave. When climate activists with the Sunrise Movement had confronted him at his dock that was the home of his houseboat worth reportedly $5 million, the senator moved away, without replying to their queries.
The activists reportedly followed Joe Manchin to a garage where he drove away in a Maserati Levante, which is worth at least $80,000. When contacted by Vice, a spokesperson for the senator refused to confirm whether the luxury car belonged to him.
The 75-year-old moderate is popular in his state, despite between a Democrat in a largely Republican state. He attended the World Economic Forum, which is described as a club for the rich by some.
Vice also reported that he is wealthy in his own right as he owns shares in a company called Enersystems, that is a contractor of one of West Virginia’s most polluting coal plants. He reportedly earned almost $500,000 from his shares.
