The 34-year freshman Republican faces the following charges:
seven counts of wire fraud
three counts of money laundering
one count of theft of public funds and
two counts of lying on financial forms submitted to the House of Representatives.
There is an almost 20-page indictment on his alleged crimes. If he is convicted of the most serious charge, which is wire fraud, George Santos could face a maximum sentence of 20 years.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon S. Peace released a statement that said that Santos had relied on “repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself.” It also stated that the NY representative had “used political contributions to line his pockets, unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits that should have gone to New Yorkers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic and lied to the House of Representatives.”
George Santos has lied about his work, his education and 9/11. His web of alleged lies encompassed almost all areas of his life including personal, professional and political, although the Justice Department is pursuing his alleged professional and political crimes.

The George Santos fallout among Congresspersons and the public
Although all the Democrats have called out the alleged crimes by Republican representative George Santos, he has received mixed signals from his own party. Although some GOP members have called for his resignation even before the charges were made, some Republicans still believe that he should remain in Congress. People on the streets also have mixed opinions on his innocence or guilt.
George Santos’ lawyer Joseph Murray declined to comment.
