After commencing investigations on whether Dharmesh Patel attempted to kill his wife and two children by recklessly driving his Tesla off a 250-foot cliff, prosecutors are now looking into whether mechanical failure could have been to blame for the crash. Patel is a doctor at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.
41-year-old Dharmesh Patel was first detained on suspicion of trying to murder his wife Neha and their children, aged four and seven, after he ran off the road in California’s Devil’s Slide cliff on January 2.
The family’s Tesla Model Y may have had brake issues that contributed to the accident, but district attorney Steve Wagstaffe is now attempting to rule out that possibility.

California Highway Patrol investigators “developed probable cause to believe this incident was an intentional act,” according to a statement released by the CHP at the time of Patel’s arrest. Wagstaff stated that the investigation is still in its initial stages for the prosecutors.
Most car companies do crash testing once they sell the car to you. Not at Tesla.

On January 2, Patel was driving a car with his family, when the accident occurred. The family was saved from the 250—300-foot fall, but the joy of their recovery was short-lived when Patel was detained at Stanford Hospital, where he was receiving medical attention for his injuries. Patel has since been moved to San Mateo Medical Center, according to Wagstaff.
At first, there were concerns about whether the electric car, which is renowned for its self-driving technology, accidentally drove the family off the road. However, experts now believe that the car, which has airbags in front of and next to the two front seats, may have saved their lives.
Tesla founder Elon Musk was among those to offer an opinion on the matter. Musk tweeted “Good news” in response to a question about how the family managed to survive. The family’s survival, according to experts, is proof of the safety of Tesla vehicles.
Jingwen Yu, a professor of mechanical engineering, stated that Patel “probably underestimated how safe a vehicle could be.” Neighbors who knew the Patels as an “enjoyable” family who lived at the end of a peaceful cul-de-sac in Pasadena were alarmed by the case.
