El Salvador’s mega-prison continues to fill up with an additional 2,000 prisoners amidst the government’s assurances that they will “never return” to the streets. The president of the small country in Central America revealed another video of the renowned mega-prison on Wednesday and said that another 2,000 accused gang members had been transported there.

As El Salvador seeks to defeat ferocious street groups, the latest arrivals joined another 2,000 alleged gangsters who arrived in the new Center for the Confinement of Terrorism last month. New video of the prison and its new inmates being hustled off buses and into the facility while they are surrounded by highly armed guards was broadcast by President Nayib Bukele.
The tattooed men are seen huddled together as they run into jail cells inside the penitentiary while wearing white shorts, hanging their shaved heads from their shoulders, and being handcuffed. Bukele tweeted that the world’s most criticized jail now had 4,000 gang members. According to earlier reports, the jail will house inmates in eight buildings, each of which has 32 cells and can accommodate 100 inmates. Only two toilets and two sinks are present in each unit. The mega-prison has the capacity to house 40,000 inmates.
The facility is regarded as the biggest in the Americas. Bukele boasted that escaping is “impossible.” While Bukele has taken a proactive stance in his fight against gangs, the effort has alarmed human rights watchdogs who fear that fundamental constitutional rights, such as the right to be free from unjustified detention, are being violated. At least 80 deaths of people in custody have been reported.
More than 60,000 alleged gang members have been apprehended by the army or cops of the nation over the past year. Even though about 57,000 of those detained are still awaiting official charges or a trial, the government’s minister for justice and peace, Gustavo Villatoro, vowed the alleged gang members would never return to the streets.
Since approving Bukele’s emergency powers in March 2022, which also gave the government the authority to approve and construct the mega-prison, approximately 65,000 suspected gang members have been apprehended. The nation’s Terrorism Confinement Center has already taken in more than 4,000 prisoners.

Bukele has requested an extension of the “State of Exception” emergency powers that have given him the authority to operate so broadly over the previous year. After three days of violence left 87 people dead, which he attributed to the notorious MS-13 group, he pushed through the new law. The expansion of the anti-gang laws still requires congressional approval, but lawmakers are anticipated to follow past precedent and do so, reports say.
