President Joe Biden signed historic legislation protecting same-sex marriages across the country on Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the fight for gay rights that has resulted from a seismic shift in public opinion.

Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act on the South Lawn of the White House, making it law that all states recognize same-sex and interracial marriages. Thousands of people attended, including Democratic and Republican lawmakers, LGBTQ advocates, and plaintiffs in marriage equality cases.

Members of both parties, as well as first lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were present. Cyndi Lauper and Sam Smith performed.

“For once, our families, mine and many of my friends — and people you know, sometimes your neighbors — we can rest easy tonight, because our families are validated,” Lauper said before the ceremony in the White House briefing room.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wore the same purple tie he wore to his daughter’s wedding to the ceremony. His daughter and her husband will have their first child in the spring.

“Today is a great day.” “Today, America takes an important step toward equality, liberty, and justice not just for some, but for everyone – everyone,” Biden said, thanking those who have long advocated for “equality and justice” in the United States.

“This law and the love it protects strike a blow against hate in all its forms,” he said. “That’s why this law matters to every single American, no matter who you are or who you love.”

Following a successful vote in the US Senate at the end of November, the bipartisan legislation was passed by the US House of Representatives on December 8. Fans are super excited.
