Police authorities in Oregon have revealed that Elias Huizar, suspected of killing two women this week in central Washington state and kidnapping a one-year-old infant, had self-inflicted gunshot wounds following a police pursuit.

Washington State Police had reported that on Monday afternoon, Huizar killed his ex-wife Amber Rodriguez at William Wiley Elementary School, where she worked. The nine-year-old kid of the former couple reported to the authorities that he saw his father shoot his mother multiple times.

While looking for Huizar, the police troopers discovered his girlfriend Angelica “Jelly” Santos, the second victim, dead at his house on the block where the West Richland school is located. Seventeen-year-old Jelly was reportedly impregnated by Huizar when she was 15. Late on Monday night, he was charged with first-degree murder in addition to an aggravating circumstance allegation of domestic abuse and firearm enhancement.

The police said that Huizar’s car was found by Oregon State Police going south on Interstate 5 close to Eugene on Tuesday afternoon, sparking a chase. Following a minor collision, the suspect and the police exchanged gunfire before the suspect took off again, according to Oregon State Police Cpt. Kyle Kennedy on Tuesday night. Kennedy said that no one was injured in the initial exchange of gunfire.

After the suspect crashed into another car a few miles away, authorities discovered that he had shot himself to death, according to Kennedy. A manhunt conducted by police in Oregon and Washington, as well as federal law enforcement, ended on Monday at 3 p.m. local time when police cars started pursuing the subject.

This incident underscores the importance of early intervention and support for victims of domestic abuse. Despite warning signs and legal actions taken against Huizar, including a protection order filed by Jelly, the cycle of violence seemed to have persisted with tragic results.
