An off-duty female cop fatally shot a man to who allegedly tried to attack her and pull her gun seconds after she kept warning: ‘I’ll kill you.’ Video footage of the incident that occurred on January 17 in Chicago shows a struggle between the cop and a man, while the man is trying to pull something from the cop.
According to reports, a police officer, in the Brainerd neighborhood, made the threat after the suspect allegedly tried to take her gun moments after she broke up a fight between four individuals, including the alleged thief, according to officials. Leevon Smith was shot by the handgun as the two grappled and fell to the ground, according to Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). He passed away about three days later.
Initially, the officer attempted to disperse a brawl between Smith and three other individuals in front of an apartment complex on the city’s notoriously violent South Side. The video captures the officer and Smith speaking briefly. In the video, Smith tries to reach for a gun as soon as the officer turns around. The officer yells at Smith, “I told your dumb a**, I’d kill you,” as Smith screamed for nearby residents to dial 911. She follows that with her third and last shot.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the officer joined the force in June. Although Smith’s family is suing the city and the officer for $10 million over the fatal encounter, she has not yet been charged in connection with the shooting, according to reports. Smith was reportedly charged with attempted robbery and severe battery, the arrest report prepared before his death stated.
