Sixty-nine people were reported dead, and four others were missing after a plane crashed Sunday in a Nepal valley, the wreckage burning so fiercely that rescue teams could not help at least one crying victim. This is the worst plane crash for Nepal in thirty years. Sixty-nine of the seventy-two people aboard were killed. It is one of the riskiest plane routes in the world due to its treacherous mountain terrain.
With the cooperation of French officials, a government committee is now probing the reason of the disaster. The Yeti Airlines aircraft was built by the French aerospace firm ATR. Officials said the plane’s black box, which captures flight data, was located on Monday, and would be turned over to the civil aviation authorities.

Many of the passengers were charred beyond recognition, and fire had destroyed 80% of the plane. The hunt for the four missing people will resume on Monday.
Nepal, a country of twenty-nine million people, is home to eight of the world’s fourteen highest mountains, including Everest. The majestic rocky terrain is a favorite tourist destination for backpackers and hikers.

Nepal has had many concerns about its aviation safety. A US-Bangla Airlines flight from Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka to Kathmandu plummeted and caught fire in early 2018, killing 51 of the 71 persons on board. A Tara Air flight from Pokhara slammed into a mountain in May 2022, killing 22 passengers. A Tara Air flight crashed in 2016 while taking the exact same route as the plane lost on Sunday. The ICAO and Nepal announced a partnership to resolve safety concerns.
In 2017 ICAO and Nepal successfully partnered to resolve a Significant Safety Concern (SSC) in the Asia-Pacific State, following a comprehensive multilateral assistance effort coordinated under the UN agency’s No Country Left Behind initiative.
