Southwest Airlines is being sued by a mother who claims she was asked about human trafficking while traveling with her 10-year-old multiracial child. The mother accuses the airline of “blatant racism.”
It all started when an employee of Southwest reported what she believed to be suspicious activity. Police were informed by the employee that Moira might not be Mary MacCarthy MacCarthy’s daughter and instead be a victim of human trafficking. MacCarthy said, that the police and airline representatives never claimed that MacCarthy was under suspicion for human trafficking, according to her. But that changed when MacCarthy got a call from an investigator with the Denver Police Department’s human trafficking unit and learned details about Southwest’s and DPD’s versions of the story.
According to the lawsuit submitted on Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, Mary MacCarthy and her daughter who is 10 years old, both residents of California, traveled to Denver on October 22, 2021, for a funeral following the unexpected death of MacCarthy’s older brother. MacCarthy claimed that when they arrived at the airport, two armed police officers from the Denver Police Department took them for questioning.
MacCarthy claims she was accused of trafficking her multiracial daughter by the officers and says she was racially profiled. The majority of the dialogue was captured by MacCarthy, who claimed that her daughter was traumatized. Minutes later, the two were let to go.
MacCarthys attorney, David Lane said to the press in statement, “The Denver police were perfectly appropriate here,” Lane said. “It was Southwest that used racial profiling to impair Mary’s ability to conclude her contract and get safe passage into the terminal. We’re filing a lawsuit because Southwest refuses to accept any responsibility or acknowledge any wrongdoing.”
