Meta recently launched its latest mixed reality headset at a very affordable price, more than 10 times less than the Apple Pro Vision mixed reality headset launched months ago. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the superior performance of Meta Quest 3S with a massive number of apps, including gaming, fitness, and entertainment, as well as parent Meta apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, all available in the same headset, at an affordable price and also demonstrated unique Orion AR glasses.
Meta has said that pre-orders of Quest 3S are available starting at $299.99, with Batman: Arkham Shadow included in purchases made by web fans. The Menlo Park, California-headquartered tech titan says that its new Quest 3S has features similar to Quest 3 and that the mixed reality headset has 4.5X resolution and color compared with Quest 2. Its website says that it has also discounted the price of Quest 3 to $499.99 from its original price of $649.99.
Meta Quest 3S launched at Connect has features including 4K Infinite+ displays plus full-color passthrough capabilities. The immersive experience device has Meta Horizon OS rebuilt to provide spatial computing. It also has artificial intelligence from Meta AI.
Apple Vision Pro is a much higher-priced mixed reality headset, starting at $3499. It is generally customized for web fans and offers many features, including gaming and enhanced work tools, as it has its own vision.
The Apple Vision Pro headset will reportedly receive an upgrade soon. Developers are reportedly looking to add the M5 chip and Apple Intelligence support to the mixed-reality headset. Mass production could begin in 2025, but the Cupertino giant needs to make its headsets affordable. Otherwise, they will only be bought by die-hard Apple fans and professionals. It will not offer much competition to Meta, which has already shipped several million mixed-reality headsets, but it will remain a niche offering.
Meta also launched Orion, described as the “most advanced pair of AR glasses ever made.” Its site said that Meta had empowered people with its developments, from Ray-Ban Meta glasses to its latest offering, Orion. The Orion prototype is available for select external web fans and Meta employees.
