Devasting wildfires have raged in Maui, Hawaii. Strong gusts from a hurricane that was passing by caused hundreds of evacuations, thousands to lose power, wrecked homes, and even prompted some inhabitants to flee into the water at the beaches to escape the fires.
The historic town of Lahaina appears to have been partially destroyed, according to officials in Maui, Hawaii. Lahaina is popular with vacationers.
In reaction to the combined flames in Lahaina and Upcountry Maui, Mayor Bissen released an emergency proclamation. Update No. 2, 9:45 p.m. In the Upcountry and Lahaina neighborhoods, firefighter crews are still battling brush and building fires.
According to the National Weather Service, powerful, destructive winds were produced overnight by Hurricane Dora, which was moving 500 miles to the south of the island chain and a very strong high-pressure system to the north of the state.
The weather service warned on Wednesday that severe fire weather conditions would persist through Wednesday afternoon due to the combination of these strong winds and low humidity levels.

Hononoapilani Highway remains open outbound only. Motorists should expect heavy traffic.
Water buffalo containing drinking water are located at Kula Fire Station, Kula Community Center, Rice Park and Crater Road – Hydrant 373.
The County requested National Guard support.
Multiple evacuation orders are in place. Structure damage has occurred, no details on the extent of the damage are available.
The American Red Cross is staffing emergency shelters at Kihei Community Center, Lahaina Civic Center and in Pukalani at Hannibal Tavares Community Center. Pet owners utilizing the shelters need to have pets properly restrained.
Hawaiian Electric Co. advises residents to stay at least thirty feet or more away from downed power lines, which may be energized.
