A massive earthquake hit California early this morning. Measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale, its epicenter was near Ferndale, about 130 miles away from San Francisco and startled many people who were asleep. Three days ago, the Bay Area experienced a smaller 3.5 quake that shook the area.
About 68,000 people mainly in Humboldt County are facing power outages after the quake disrupted oil and power lines. There have been a few gas leaks across the region in Fortuna and Rio Dell. A bridge in Ferndale cracked after the seismic activity in the location and has been closed.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred off the coast of northern California. The seismic movement took place reportedly at 2.54 a.m., on Tuesday and had a depth of 16.1 km. Although there were a few aftershocks no tsunami warning was issued by the authorities.

California is situated in a geographical region that is prone to earthquakes. It regularly faces tremors and seismologists warn that there could be a major quake in the next three decades.
The Golden State is located between two major tectonic plates. The Pacific Plate consists of San Diego, Los Angeles and Big Sur. The North American Plate consists of Sacramento, San Francisco and Sierra Nevada. The tectonic plates come up against each other at the San Andreas fault and cause earthquakes.

California has a big budget of $16 million for sensing earthquakes seconds before they occur. There are thousands of sensors along the state to detect seismic movements. Officials hope that early detection could give public authorities precious moments to shut down utilities and major transport systems that might cause huge losses of lives.
In 1903, the state of California lost 3,000 people, when a major earthquake struck San Francisco. Since then the reported deaths in other quakes have been 65 or below. One missing person has been reported, so far after today’s earthquake near Ferndale, California.
