King Charles and Queen Camilla joined members of a congregation at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church for the Sunday service conducted by the Most Reverend Kanishka Raffel, the archbishop of Sydney. They also met with many web fans inside and outside the church.
The 75-year-old monarch arrived in Australia late Friday on a rainy day and rested on Saturday. He made his first public appearance on Sunday. He last visited Australia in 2018 for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, opening the games for his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Later on Sunday, he addressed the New South Wales state parliament. He presented the parliament with a gift of an hourglass. The upper house is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.
King Charles expressed his “great joy” as he visited Australia as the sovereign and also expressed that he was happy “to renew a love of this country and its people which I have cherished for so long.” Charles spent several decades as a student in Australia.
King and Queen Charles were reportedly touched as the Sydney Opera House was lit up with a series of images of the royal couple. The well-known Sydney monument can be seen from Admiralty House. The king also received several honorary ranks from the three services of the Australian Defense Force.
On Monday, King Charles will visit Canberra with his wife, Queen Camilla, and offer support to various environmental projects, a fellowship program, and more.
King Charles is also expected to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled to take place in Apia, the capital of Samoa, between October 21 and October 26.
