Attorneys were in court today to get their client Alec Murdaugh a new trial because County Court Clerk Becky Hill swayed the jurors to vote guilty.
The judge questioned Becky Hill and the other twelve Murdaugh jurors on Monday.
Chief Justice Jean Toal will assess the viability of the allegations of jury tampering.
Juror admits the trial clerk swayed her guilty verdict. Juror Z stated that during the six-week trial, remarks made by Colleton County clerk Becky Hill affected her verdict, which found Murdaugh guilty of the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. She claimed that one of those remarks was Hill’s instruction to keep a “close eye” on Murdaugh. She also testified, “It felt like she made it seem like he was already guilty.”
Juror Z wrote an affidavit stating that her March verdict was influenced by “pressure from other jurors.”
There is little evidence to support Murdaugh’s defense team’s request for an entirely new trial. Since then, the claims have prompted two different state investigations into Hill, an ethics complaint on the purported mishandling of her office, and the cancellation of her memoir’s book sales following her co-author’s plagiarism accusation.
If it is found that Becky Hill attempted to influence the jury with inappropriate remarks and that her comments impacted the jurors, Alec Murdoch will face a new trial.
According to the court bailiff, the jurors who were awaiting Toal’s testimony were glued to a live feed of the proceedings on their phones.
