Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro flew to Florida a couple of days before the end of his presidential term in Brazil. He challenged the results of the October 2022 presidential elections. Bolsonaro narrowly lost to rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. On Sunday, many of his far-right followers stormed important buildings in Brazil including the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court. Democratic congresspersons are asking the Biden administration to remove Bolsonaro from his self-exile, in Florida.
Two Democrats–US Representatives Joaquin Castro and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that the US government should not provide refuge to Bolsonaro. They want him to return to Brazil. President Joe Biden and the former Brazilian president have had a contentious relationship, in the past.
Former president Jair Bolsonaro is a friend of former president Donald Trump. He took refuge in suburban Orlando, in Trump’s home state of Florida. It appears as if his followers followed a similar playbook to the Jan. 6 insurrections at the Capitol as they violently stormed important locations in Brazil, on Sunday.
On Monday, the White House said that no official request from Brazil about Bolsonaro’s status was received by them. On the same day, Brazil’s O Globo reported that their former president was suffering from abdominal pain and was under treatment at a hospital in the U.S.
On Monday, Brazilian troops consisting of soldiers and police dismantled a camp of supporters of the former president. Earlier, on Sunday, demonstrators had broken windows, furniture and more. They destroyed pieces of art, stole artifacts and guns and more. The police dispersed the crowd with tear gas, after three hours of rioting.
President Lula, who assumed power on January 1, said that he would bring to book those who had engaged in violence.
Former president Bolsonaro, who is in Florida, said that those who rioted had “crossed the line,” but denied that he had incited his supporters.
