People will need to shelter in place and keep all air conditioning systems off, so smoke does not enter your home. Fire fighters are on the scene and are expected to work until Saturday to put out the blaze. The factory is home to a site where plastics and other materials for recycling or resale are stored.
The environmental agency of Indiana warned that projections indicate elevated amounts of tiny smoke particles in the air on Wednesday, issuing an air quality advisory for Wayne and Randolph counties in eastern Indiana.
Indiana’s state fire marshal, Steve Jones, said Tuesday “the smoke is definitely toxic.”

Richmond fire chief Tim Brown said, “Multiple fires, which began burning Tuesday afternoon, continued burning Wednesday morning within about 14 acres of various types of plastics stored both inside and outside buildings at the former factory site in Richmond, 70 miles east of Indianapolis.” “There’s plastics inside buildings, there’s plastics outside buildings, there’s plastics in semitrailers that are throughout the grounds here at the complex, so we’re dealing with many types of plastics. It’s very much a mess.”
