Hurricane Milton landed on Wednesday near Siesta Key at about 8:30 p.m. The Category 3 storm tore through the coast of Florida at the barrier island near Sarasota and later moved out into the sea on Thursday morning. However, it left behind widespread destruction and loss of lives as it moved away. As of now, at least six people have died.
There were a record number of tornadoes, and about 11 million people are at risk of flash and river flooding. Power outage USA said that more than 3.3 million people lost electricity due to power outages, and electric poles and equipment suffered immense damage from the storm.
Over 12 tornadoes, extreme winds, high tides, and a storm surge caused widespread damage in many parts of the Sunshine State. Roads were flooded, and electric cables and power poles were down in several locations. Cars remained submerged in many places, and boats also rested on roads after Hurricane Milton hit the coast of Florida.
Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach saw widespread destruction on the south side of Tampa Bay. Other locations in the Tampa Bay area that have seen widespread damage and destruction include Sanibel Island, Pasco County, Sarasota, and Pinellas County.
Hurricane Milton also tore open the dome of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Roof panels were ripped, and there was widespread destruction, but fortunately, no deaths. It also affected Hillsborough County, St. Lucie County, and St. John’s River flooding, which continues to affect several counties.
President Biden posted on social media. He urged Floridians to “stay inside and off the roads.” He said help was on the way, but they should “shelter in place” until help arrived and until local officials said it was “safe to go out.”
Hurricane Milton brought 11.43 inches of rainfall in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday. This is the highest rainfall recorded since October 1922, when Tampa received 10.33 inches of rain.
