Although Hurricane Idalia made landfall a few hours ago, the storm surge continues to be a major problem along the coast of Florida’s Big Bend area. Almost 300K people are expected to be without power.
The storm’s center is currently moving toward Georgia. There are signs erected throughout Florida and around the Southeast coast warning of hurricanes and storm surges. Idalia will cause large areas of Georgia and the Carolinas to experience both heavy rain and high gusts.
At 7:45 a.m. EDT, Idalia’s core made landfall close to Keaton Beach with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, making it a powerful Category 3. The Big Bend region of Florida experienced its second-strongest hurricane landfall ever with this storm. Packing 125-mph winds, it was the strongest storm on record to pummel directly to Florida’s so-called Big Bend region
Storm surge warnings are in place along Florida’s Gulf Coast, including the Tampa Bay area and the Big Bend region, there is a significant risk of life-threatening storm surge inundation. Storm surge has already set records. Hurricane Idalia could bring 16-foot storm surges.
Governor Ron DeSantis worked with the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association to waive their no-pet policies in preparation for Hurricane Idalia. Floridians in evacuation zones will need a safe place for themselves and their families, which include their pets. VISIT FLORIDA has activated the Emergency Accommodations Module with Expedia to provide real-time availability of hotel rooms throughout the state.

North Carolina Governor Cooper declares State of Emergency ahead of Hurricane Idalia impacts.
Isolated tornadoes in the far southeast near the outer bands of Idalia will pose a last hazard, according to the weather agency. Idalia will fortunately be diverted eastward as a surface cold front sweeps into north Georgia since it is moving quickly.
