On Saturday, hundreds of prisoners escaped from the National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince. The Haitian capital has been facing major unrest from surges in violence, beginning on Thursday and escalating on Saturday, with the prison break after fighting broke out in the capital. Local media says that an unknown number of inmates have escaped prison.
One union of the Haiti Police posted an appeal on social media asking all police officers in the capital to assist the ones fighting at the prison. The post pleaded with these officers as well as the military to use their cars and weapons to battle against the prisoners.
The statement also warned that the capital would be in bad shape “no one will be spared” and there would be an additional 3,000 bandits in Port-au-Prince, if the police didn’t succeed in slowing and stopping the prison outbreak.
Multiple security sources have said that violence escalated on Thursday as gangs targeted police stations, the international airport in the capital as well as the National Penitentiary.
On Friday, Jimmy Cherizier a former police officer who heads an alliance of gangs said that they would continue in their efforts to remove the Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry is visiting Kenya to mobilize the deployment of troops to guard the island nation. Jimmy Cherizier is nicknamed Barbecue and coordinates gangs under the Vivre Ensemble, translated as Living Together.
Haitian daily Le Nouvelliste said that the assailants had conducted a recon on Thursday using drones. The prison was attacked early Saturday. It holds many known gang leaders as well as those who had assassinated former president Jovenel Moise.
The Caribbean island of Haiti has faced gang warfare, poverty, natural calamities and assassinations from the past years, as earlier reported. UN reports say that gangs control 80 percent of Haiti. Many residents have fled from the island to avoid poverty, rape and violence.
