Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla appeared with California Gov. Gavin Newsom at a joint news conference. Musk announced that Tesla would open a global engineering headquarters in the former home of Hewlett Packard. Two years ago, the electric car company left California for Austin, Texas. Now, the company’s homecoming to the Golden State will include a new engineering headquarters, at Palo Alto. The corporate headquarters will remain in Austin.
Musk announced the news and described the electric vehicle maker’s move to into the old building occupied by HP as “a poetic transition from the company that founded Silicon Valley to Tesla.”

Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his happiness on Tesla’s move to the state as he described California as a state which decided the future and also called it “America’s coming attraction.”

He also called Tesla a “California company,” and mentioned that it began its operations in the state. He added that the state has passed legislation and regulations that have supported Tesla as well as other electric vehicle brands for several years.
Newsom added that he hoped that the state’s partnership with Tesla would change the way they produced and consumed energy in the Golden State, in the nation as well as in the world.
Musk had left California due to various reasons including cheaper taxes as well as labor costs in Texas, and his spat with health officials as he wanted the Fremont manufacturing facility to remain open during the pandemic.

Elon Musk did not mention the reason why he returned to Silicon Valley. Reasons could be incentives from the state that have not been mentioned, a need to be closer to San Francisco, the headquarters of Twitter and/or other unknown reasons.
Gov. Newsom and Musk have known each other for decades. Gov. Gavin Newsom also shared a joke on finances with Musk when he said, “Your [networth] went negative, and I got a pension, so eat your heart out.”
