According to a news release, a Beverly Hills woman was arrested after Citrus County deputies discovered a child inside a home with over 300 rodents on Wednesday. Citrus County sheriff’s deputies said they were called to Shannon Marie Morgan’s Beverly Hills home on Wednesday night to investigate an animal cruelty complaint. Deputies were “overwhelmed by the pungent smell of ammonia” when they entered Morgan’s home, according to the sheriff’s office in a news release.
At first, they saw multiple cages and glass aquariums containing snakes and rodents. Then they rats and cats running freely,” the news release revealed. It seemed obvious that these animals had been deprived of all of their basic necessities.
According to the news release, there was a “build-up of fecal matter” and stench of urine throughout the house and cages. This was causing fly, roach, and other insect infestation. According to deputies, the infestation was also fueled by garbage, dirty dishes, and spoilt food found throughout the house.
Deputies discovered a ferret inside a cage littered with urine and feces in one of the bedrooms, as well as a dog in an overcrowded cage. “Both animals were deprived of food and water,” according to deputies. Further investigation revealed a child in a second bedroom with trash all over the floor, “creating a habitat for insects,” and a mattress covered in roaches. People who are fans of animals are really upset to see this.
Blood was also observed on the floor and it looked like free cats having eaten a rat, deputies revealed. According to the news release, deputies discovered around 50 rodents in cages in a third bedroom, in addition to the over 300 other rodents roaming freely.
Any form of abuse should not be tolerated, said Sheriff Mike Prendergast. Here, the conditions of the abode and the animals were so bad that sheriff’s office personnel were advised not to enter. This type of environment should never be tolerated by children or animals. Deputies charged Morgan with 12 counts of animal cruelty and one count of child neglect. Her bond was set at $26,000 dollars.
