On Thursday night, a female field hockey player suffered serious injuries that affected her face and teeth and had to be hospitalized. A male hockey player played a shot in the third quarter that struck her in the face The injured player is a hockey player in the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School girls field hockey team while the male player is a player in Swampscott team. Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) allows male participation in female teams under the Massachusetts Equal Rights Amendment.
According to the Taunton Daily Gazette Dighton-Rehoboth (DR) Superintendent Bill Runey released a statement where he said that “the player, her family and coaches” remained in his “prayers.” The statement also said that the incident had magnified the “concerns of many about player safety” and that he understood that MIAA had guidelines in place for “co-ed participation” and more.
He also noted that there was a need for a “renewed approach by the MIAA to protect the safety” of their “athletes” and more.
7NEWS reported that Runey said that the student who was hit was released from hospital but required a lot of dental work and had a “long road to recovery.”
According to the WCVB site, Swampscott Public Schools Athletic Director Kelly Wolfe said the player who took the shot which injured the female athlete was a 4-year varsity player. He was also co-captain of the team.
Wolfe also said that the male player “has the exact same right to participate as any player on any team.”
MIAA officials wrote, “Massachusetts General Law was originally enacted to protect students from discrimination based on sex, and later expanded to protect students based on gender identification” and more.
Runey told WCVB that he understood the law but thought that there should be more consideration for player safety when there is co-ed competition as there were “zero restrictions” for any male athlete who participated in a female sport. He also wanted the “MIAA to facilitate some conversations to have some middle ground in terms of player safety.”
