On Tuesday morning, eight dolphins washed ashore at a beach in New Jersey. The event was described as a “mass stranding event,” by marine officials. Two of the dolphins were already dead while six were euthanized as a humane gesture since their conditions were rapidly deteriorating, although the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) made attempts to assist them. A veterinarian examined the mammals and stated that they would face a slow and painful death, if they were returned to the ocean.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the dolphins were discovered at 11 a.m., by locals and others. They made an attempt to keep the dolphins wet with buckets of water till the arrival of marine authorities. Sea Isle City police and other first responders such as EMS, fire and the public works department offered assistance to the staff from MMSC.
The marine authorities posted on social media about the difficult decision to euthanize six dolphins as two of the beached ones were already dead. They also mentioned that they shared “in the public’s sorrow for these beautiful animals” and hoped that the “necropsies” they conducted would help them understand what they had earlier described as a “mass stranding event.”
Last week, two other common dolphins were washed ashore on a sand bar in Sandy Hook bay. Both the adult and the calf died. Although common dolphins are not an endangered species, the recent deaths are worrying locals as they seem to be more frequent.

Almost two dozen whales have been found dead across the shores on the east coast from New York to New Jersey. Some environmental groups say that wind turbine farm projects that are found off the Jersey coast are responsible for the deaths, while scientists and government agencies disagree.
Research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that they did not find any “whale mortality” that could be attributed to “offshore wind activities.”
Scientists and government agencies have said that necropsies on nearly half of the whales indicated that ship strikes were responsible for their deaths.
