Early Sunday morning, the Democratic Republic of Congo DR Congo said that its army has stopped a coup attempt. Several people including three Americans, one Brit and many Congolese have been arrested according to officials. However, their whereabouts remain unknown. Opposition self-exiled leader Christian Malanga was killed in the palace for resisting arrest. His son Marcel Malanga has been arrested.
Congolese army spokesperson Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge told media that Malanga has been killed, his son and three Americans and a naturalized British citizen have been detained and the total number of suspects that have been detained is 50.
Ekenge also appeared on state RTNC TV later on Sunday and said that the coup had been “nipped in the bud by Congolese defense and security forces (and) the situation is under control.”
Early Sunday, a group of armed men attacked the home of Vital Kamerhe, early Sunday morning. The senior politician of the Democratic Republic of Congo is a close ally of president Felix Tshisekedi and was tipped to be the nation’s next speaker. He is reported to be safe.
Armed men also occupied the Palais de la Nation, which is the office of the president of the nation in the city center of capital Kinshasa. It is guarded by the Republican Guard.
The US ambassador to DR Congo said that she was shocked to learn that Americans may have been involved in the attempted coup. Ms Lucy Tamyln said on social media that the US government would “cooperate fully with the DR Congo authorities” and “hold accountable any US citizen involved” and more.

African Union chairman Moussa Faki also condemned “any use of force to change the constitutional order in any African state whatsoever.”
President Felix Tshisekedi was elected for a second term in December 2023. The results were disputed despite his winning 78 percent of the vote. He has not commented on the failed coup as yet.
