The Las Vegas Metro police responded to a domestic violence callout last month, only to discover a scene of unimaginable horror. Two children, aged nine and eleven, were found locked in a dog cage, and four others were severely beaten in a squalid apartment near Flamingo Road and Valley View Boulevard. Police described it as “the worst” case of child abuse they had ever encountered.
31-year-old Travis Doss and his wife, 33-year-old Amanda Stamper, who shared the one-bedroom apartment with seven children, all under the age of 11, now face multiple child abuse charges. Doss, the father of all seven children, is accused of attempted murder, eight counts of child abuse or neglect with substantial bodily harm, and six counts of child abuse or neglect, all felonies. Stamper, the mother of the youngest child, faces seven counts of child abuse or neglect with substantial bodily harm.
The horrific conditions endured by the children were evident from the moment they were found. One of the boys kept in the cage had bruised eyes that were black, swollen and shut, in addition to multiple other bruises, and was severely malnourished and anemic. He required a blood transfusion, and both his kidneys were enlarged due to backed-up urine. Medical professionals at University Medical Center reported that the child would have died if there had been further delay in commencing treatment.
Disturbingly, Stamper revealed that Doss had been violent with the five older children, using belts, extension cords, skillets, and his own hands and feet to inflict harm. Shockingly, a skillet with a wooden handle had signs of being used to harm the children’s heads. Stamper also disclosed that Doss had locked the two boys in the cage as a form of punishment for stealing food.
The story took a darker turn when Stamper admitted that Doss was not only her husband but also her pimp, subjecting her to years of physical abuse. She claimed that if she had intervened in the children’s abuse, she would have faced even more severe abuse herself. Prosecutors, however, contend that Stamper was aware of the alleged abuse despite her coerced involvement in sex work.
Both Doss and Stamper have pleaded not guilty to the charges they face. The horrifying case has drawn nationwide attention and raised questions about child protection and domestic violence prevention.
