In a case that gripped the nation, Cult Mom Lori Vallow Daybell was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
This mother of two embarked on a bizarre and tragic journey that led her down the path of religious extremism, culminating in the disappearance of her children and a disturbing connection to a doomsday cult ending up in murder.
She got married and had two children, a daughter named Tylee Ryan from her previous marriage and a son named Joshua “JJ” Vallow from her marriage to Charles Vallow.
When it was learned that JJ Vallow, age 7, and Tylee Ryan, age 17, had vanished in September 2019, the attention was amplified. According to reports, Lori and Chad provided confusing and questionable justifications for the location of their kids. When the worried grandparents called the police, a national search for the missing kids began.
On Monday, Lori Vallow Daybell received punishment from Judge Steven Boyce in the form of several fixed life sentences in jail without the chance of parole for the murders of two of her children and a romantic rival. She sat in jail for three years to wait for the fate of her life. Not once did she apologize, nor did she have any remorse as she always sat mindless in the courtroom while the jury had to.
The judge observed the jurors’ “disgust” throughout the trial and made a note of it. Boyce described the scene as horrifying and said that although law enforcement, the jury, and he personally will be haunted by visions of the children’s bodies, he saw no indication that Vallow Daybell is sorry for what he did.
Boyce informed Vallow Daybell, “You chose the most evil and destructive path possible, despite having a wealth of better, less harmful, options.” He contrasted her vacation in Hawaii with the shallow graves her children were in Idaho.
In an 8 /12-minute court appearance Lori Vallow Daybell shocked the courtroom when she said, “Jesus knows me, and Jesus understands me,” Vallow Daybell said, adding that she mourns those who died. But, she added, “Jesus Christ knows that no one was murdered in this case.” She eerily continued while the jury watched, “I had access to Heaven, and the spirit world,” she said, saying she was tempted to remain in the afterlife, she returned to her body. “Since then, I have had many communications from people now living in Heaven, including my children” and other relatives.” “Jesus knows me and Jesus understands me. I mourn with all of you who mourn my children and Tammy. Jesus Christ knows the truth of what happened here. Jesus Christ knows that no one was murdered in this case. Accidental deaths happen. Suicides happen. Fatal side effects from medications happen.”
Lori’s husband Chad Daybell is facing three counts of first-degree murder, Grand Theft by deception and conspiracy to commit murder. The murder charge he faces is for the alleged killing of his previous wife Tammy” Daybell back in October of 2019.
In all, Daybell is accused of six charges.
He is accused of killing his first wife Tammy Daybell and her children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16, who belonged to his second wife Lori Vallow Daybell.
Additionally, he is accused of planning to kill three people. That conspiracy charge also involves conspiring to conduct grand theft by deceit in relation to JJ and Tylee’s deaths. After the kids’ deaths, Lori Vallow Daybell stole their Social Security cheques and was found guilty of grand theft.
Case of Chad Daybell won’t be tried until 2024. Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow Daybell were to be tried separately; the court’s judge Steven Boyce ruled in March after approving Daybell’s attorneys’ plea to split the proceedings. Daybell had previously agreed to forego his right to a prompt trial.
