A video of the Croatian Foreign minister trying to kiss the German foreign minister went viral and created controversy. Gordan Grlic Radman tried to kiss Annalena Baerbock as many ministers were posing for a group photo in Berlin. Many web fans posted remarks criticizing him after the video went viral. He initially shrugged off the remarks but later apologized.
The viral video shows 65-year-old Radman leaning in to shake Baerbock’s hand and trying to kiss her, during the EU conference on Thursday. The 42-year-old German minister looks embarrassed as she appears to avoid his affectionate gesture.
Barron’s reported that Grlic Radman told reporters, “I don’t know what the problem was…We always greet each other warmly. It is a warm human approach to a colleague.”
Rada Boric, who is a prominent women’s rights activist in Croatia, called the minister’s move as “highly inappropriate” and said that “warm greetings” should be exchanged between those whose relationship allows kissing.
Boric also told local outlet Jutarnji List that the German minister had seemed surprised at the closeness and that “such a relationship doesn’t exist here.”
Other outlets also blasted the minister and called the incident “sexual harassment.”
Insiders told German outlet Bild that Croatian minister Grlic Radman was late when he reached the photo shoot and the kiss had been “a clumsy attempt to quickly greet each other.”
According to Croatian media Radman also said, “Maybe it was an awkward moment. If someone saw something bad in it, then I apologize to whoever took it that way.”
Baerbock has not commented on the incident. On Saturday evening she said, “We didn’t talk about kissing, today” when a reporter asked her a question. Her reply was reportedly given at a press conference along with Jeyhun Bayramov, who is her counterpart from Azerbaijan.
