A convicted felon shot a corrections officer in Jacksonville, Florida, after the officer tried to check on a woman who was assaulted by the felon at a truck stop. The suspect shot the off-duty officer and left Jacksonville, Florida, with his companion. He was arrested in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Sunday, according to authorities. He has been extradited to Florida and faces multiple charges, including murder.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said that the US Marshals Regional Task Force arrested Demaurea Grant in Gastonia for the murder of Brad McNew, who was a Corrections Officer in the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Officer McNew was off duty when he tried to help the woman whom Grant assaulted. She is also being questioned.
The Gastonia Police Department, who arrested the 29-year-old suspect, said that Grant had outstanding warrants for charges including assaulting an officer in 2022. The suspect was also convicted of multiple felonies in 2015. They included kidnapping, common law robbery, assault, and other charges. He was out on parole.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said in a news conference late on Sunday, “Today’s arrest is about accountability, accountability for a person who senselessly took the life of a man who was attempting to help another human being in suffering,” and more.
Sheriff Waters said that Grant had been charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault with a firearm, and discharging a firearm in public. He is being held without bond till his extradition to Florida.
The investigation is ongoing. There is a GoFundMe page for the JSO officer, Brad McNew, who has been with the office for 24 years. He intervened to help a victim being assaulted by the suspect and was fatally shot.
On Saturday, at a candlelight vigil to remember McNew’s life, his son Liam said, “I know he didn’t have any regrets when he helped that woman who was being abused.”
