A Chinese exchange student was discovered alive but “cold and scared” in a tent in the Utah wilderness after falling victim to a “cyber kidnapping” scheme in which his parents were blackmailed for $80,000.
The Riverdale police statement said that the high school reported to Riverdale Police that they were contacted by the victim’s parents in China. The parents reported to school officials that they received a photograph of their child that would indicate he was abducted, and they requested a ransom.” Kai’s family alerted to police that they transferred 80,000 dollars to bank accounts in China due to continuous threats from the kidnappers.”
According to authorities, he was certain that he needed to isolate himself since his family was in danger in China. It’s unclear how he found out and why he was withdrawing from everyone.
Additionally, the press release from the authorities said, “Cyber kidnappers have been targeting foreign exchange students, in particular, Chinese foreign exchange students.” Law enforcement officials reported Kai was later discovered in a tent near Brigham City, Utah, “alive but very cold and scared,” authorities said. He had “no heat source” in the tent but did have some food and water and a sleeping bag, among other items.”

Riverdale police were briefed by the FBI on several recent incidents involving cyber assassins who abducted Chinese foreign exchange students. The young foreign exchange students and their families are threatened by the culprits, who also want a ransom. Warren said the kids are advised to isolate themselves and, under pressure, snap photos of themselves that appear to be taken hostage and email them to their relatives.
Riverdale police suspected Kai was self-isolating in a Brigham City canyon region after acquiring bank records, purchase history from the previous month, phone ping records, and information about a recent incident with Provo police who expressed worry for Kai’s safety after he attempted to set up a campground.
