Leftist leader Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva promised to “rebuild” Brazil “with the people” as he was sworn in as the country’s new president for a historic third term.

“Our message to Brazil is one of hope and reconstruction,” Lula said after signing the document that formally established him as president in a speech before the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Congress.

“In recent years, this nation’s great edifice of rights, sovereignty, and development has been systematically demolished. And we will devote all of our efforts to re-erecting this edifice.”

Lula also issued a veiled threat to Jair Bolsonaro, who now faces mounting legal consequences for his anti-democratic rhetoric and handling of the COVID-19 pandemic because he no longer has presidential immunity.

“We do not carry any spirit of vengeance against those who attempted to subjugate the nation to their personal and ideological designs,” Lula said, without mentioning his predecessor by name. “Those who erred will be held accountable for their mistakes.”

He also accused Bolsonaro’s administration of “genocide” for failing to properly respond to the COVID-19 emergency, which killed over 680,000 Brazilians.

“The perpetrators of this genocide must be investigated and punished,” he said.

Lula has promised to “make Brazil happy again,” in his words. However, he faces numerous challenges, including rising poverty and deteriorating public services, such as a lack of investment in education and healthcare. Fans are super excited.

Lula left Congress in an open-top Rolls-Royce after his inauguration. He then arrived at the Planalto Palace, where he walked up its ramp with his wife Rosangela, Kayapó tribe Chief Raoni Metuktire, a young Black boy, and a disabled man.
