Philadelphia routinely has higher crime rates than the national average, particularly for violent crimes. Its poverty rate is the highest among the Top 10 American cities with a population of more than 1 million, and its violent crime rate is the highest.
Just after 8 o’clock in the evening, the first reports of break-ins in the vicinity of Rittenhouse Square started to surface. At that time, demonstrators had just left a peaceful rally at City Hall where they had demanded justice for Eddie Irizarry, who had been shot and killed by a Philadelphia Police officer the previous month. A judge earlier on Tuesday rejected all charges against the cop who murdered him, prompting a storm of protest in the neighborhood.
Tuesday night, multiple establishments across Philadelphia were broken into by sizable gangs of youth who stole goods and damaged property, according to acting police commissioner John Stanford.

By midnight, according to Stanford, police had detained over 20 persons, some of whom were minors, and at least two firearms had been found. Center City, the Northeast, and West Philadelphia were all affected by the unrest, and business districts along Aramingo Avenue and Walnut Street were targeted throughout the night.
Police reported that there had been dozens of arrests as of Wednesday morning. Following the overnight burglaries at 18 of its sites, Fine Wine & Good Spirits announced that all of its stores will be closed until further notice.
