President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that will limit the number of people seeking asylum in the U.S. via the border with Mexico. Thousands of migrants from South America and other parts of the world use the US-Mexico border to cross into the country illegally. The new executive order will stop asylum claims at the border when the numbers reach 2,500 per day.

The number of immigrants crossing over to the US has been much higher than the proposed number, and hence, the executive order could be implemented as early as Tuesday night. Reports say that the crossings in May were more than 3,500 per day.

A bipartisan committee in Congress reached 2,500, but a border bill was not passed as Donald Trump urged Republicans to block it.

President Biden described immigration as the “lifeblood of America” and more. He said that there was “a worldwide migrant crisis” and that the nation had to secure its border, as limitless people may try to come to the US, which he described as the best place on the planet.

President Biden briefly acknowledged that his executive order would be criticized. He said that “doing nothing” was not an option and that they had to ensure they would “preserve who we are for future generations” and more.

Many Republicans, including the Senate Minority leader and House Speaker, have spoken against the executive order and described it as too little and that it had come too late.

The non-profit American Civil Liberties Union plans to sue the Biden administration over the signing of the executive order.

The Transactional Records Access Clearing House (TRAC) has reported that more than 1.1 million asylum seekers are waiting for approval in immigration courts to date. Syracuse University’s nonprofit research group said it takes four years for an asylum seeker to receive a hearing in immigration court.
