The incident unfolded around 4:30 pm. The footage shows an unsuspecting mail carrier diligently tending to her duties when the perpetrators struck, snatching mail from her grasp and brandishing a gun at her head. The postal worker, with 33 years of service, is seen as terrified as she stares down the barrel of a gun. They asked for her phone and the keys to the mailvan, which she handed over. What they stole from the mailvan before they ran off is yet to be determined.
The 63-year-old victim was emotionally shaken but physically unharmed. She reportedly went to a neighbor’s house and called 911. As the trauma lingers, it casts a shadow over her sense of security, leaving her restless nights haunted by the memory of the frightening encounter.
This horrific incident is not isolated but a disturbing trend plaguing the U.S. Postal Service. Postal carriers, admired for their commitment to service despite adversity, are increasingly targeted by criminals seeking to exploit their vulnerability. According to the federal government, since April, at least six mail carriers in the Bay Area have been robbed.
The motives behind such attacks range from pursuing personal gain, with stolen checks and prescriptions as prime targets, to possessing USPS “arrow keys,” a relic of antiquated security measures with modern-day implications.
Despite the USPS’ proactive efforts with initiatives like Project Safe Delivery, aimed at safeguarding postal employees, there is escalating violence. Mail robbery has surged over the past decade, with incidents climbing by 30% in the last year alone, according to U.S. Postal Inspection Service data. To raise awareness of the problem, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has started organizing protests nationwide.
