Alphabet released an upgrade Gemini Pro 1.5 two months after launching its AI Gemini Ultra. Although it is a smaller model, Google DeepMind, which developed the new model, Gemini Pro 1.5, says that it is as capable as the Gemini Ultra. It can handle large amounts of text, audio, or video input.
Google says that Gemini Pro 1.5 can ingest and make sense of large amounts of information—one hour of video, 11 hours of audio, 700,000 words, or 30,000 lines of code simultaneously. This is much more than existing AI models, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 that powers ChatGPT.
In its blog, Google also said that Gemini 1.5 was more efficient in training and serving as it had a new Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture, which was also based on Transformer functions. It was quicker to learn complex tasks and maintained quality “while being more efficient to train and serve.”
Gemini Pro 1.5 can process vast amounts of information in one go and “analyze, classify and summarize large amounts of content within a given prompt.”
The Google blog also said that Gemini Pro 1.5 could solve problems “across longer blocks of code.” It also outperformed the 1.0 version in 87 benchmarks and broadly performed at a level similar to 1.0 Ultra.
Gemini Pro 1.5 has safety checks and balances, and the tech giant has said it has conducted “extensive evaluations” on “content safety and representational harms.”
Google offers a limited preview to developers who can test Gemini Pro 1.5 through AI Studio and Google’s Vertex AI cloud platform API. The tech giant has not mentioned a date for its wider release to web fans or companies.
