Although the president of CNN said that he had resigned because of his failure to disclose a personal relationship with another staff member, this might not be the only factor involved. Many staff have said that the relationship between Jeff Zucker and colleague Allison Gollust was an open secret and it wasn’t a big issue as both of them were divorced.
Billionaire John Malone, who has donated huge sums of money to Donald Trump, is the CEO of Liberty Media which is the largest shareholder in Discovery. He has a 25 percent share in Discovery. Warner-Media which owns CNN is likely to go under the control of Discovery later this year.
Malone is a big supporter of Trump. He had donated $250,000 for Trump’s inauguration. He has criticized CNN just like Trump did and continues to do so. Malone had also criticized CNN, when the deal was been discussed in 2019.

According to a report by CNBC he told the outlet that he would like to see “CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism it started with with.” He also added that then they would “actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing.”
Many years ago, Jeff Zucker and Donald Trump were friends. Zucker gave Trump his break as a reality show host in NBC’s “The Apprentice.” However, Zucker later spoke out against Trump when he was at the helm of CNN and Trump often spoke out against the outlet.
Warner-Media CEO Jason Kilar reportedly called Zucker a few days ago and told him that he had to resign or he would be terminated. Kilar had apparently heard the news from Chris Cuomo’s lawyer. Kilar and Zucker never had a smooth relationship. Kilar also discussed the situation with John Stankey, the CEO of AT&T.
Since Jeff Zucker admittedly did not disclose his personal relationship, which is against corporate procedures in the company, John Malone insisted that the procedures should be followed. Jeff Zucker resigned from his post. Many of the staff at CNN are unhappy with what has happened. It remains to be seen if CNN will change from its “so called left wing” leanings and leans towards the right wing in future.
