While many common personal hygiene issues and the toxins in food receive greater attention, what we wear can also have an impact on our health. Previous research revealed that the incredibly cheap clothing sold on websites like Shein and AliExpress (BABAF) had higher amounts of substances like lead, PFAS, and phthalates.
Not just one garment manufacturer, but a number of firms that produce a few particular things are the most recent to come under examination.
BPA is a chemical that is present in some plastics and, when exposed to humans at high quantities, has the potential to disrupt normal brain function and potentially cause some forms of asthma, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. According to studies, handling receipt paper for a brief period of time can cause BPA to enter the bloodstream and be absorbed via the skin, according to Kaya Allan Sugerman, director of CEH’s illegal hazardous threats program. “Finding such high levels of BPA in our apparel is troubling because sports bras and athletic shirts are worn for hours at a time and are designed to be sweated in.” Sports shirts are also a concern.
Among the other companies that acquired legal protection were Asics (ASCCF), The North Face, and Fila (FILAF).
Nike (NKE), Athleta (GPS), and Victoria’s Secret’s (VSCO) Pink were warned by the California-based Center for Environmental Health (CEH) watchdog group about elevated amounts of BPA in some of the clothes they sell.
PFAS and nursing mothers is of grave concern. An EPA-certified lab did the testing, which mostly identified fluorine in the fabric that is adjacent to the nipple. Any garment that contained more than 10 parts per million (ppm) fluorine was noted. It is unknown what exposure to PFAS through clothing implies for people, but recent lab work by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health indicated that skin contact to the chemicals is just as dangerous for your health as swallowing them through food or drink.
Additionally, harmful substances close to the nipple cause worry for nursing mothers. Linda Birnbaum, Scientist Emerita and former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program, advised nursing moms to take a shower after working out in a sports bra before feeding their infants.
EHN.org also participated in a study and found that BPA chemicals in yoga pants.
