Walmart, the nations and worldwide largest retailer announced Thursday that it plans to open more than 30 Sam’s Club locations in the coming years, marking the company’s first expansion since 2017.
“We’ve seen remarkable growth over the past few years with a record number of members, and we’re excited to bring the experience of Sam’s Club to even more markets as we expand our footprint,” said Kathryn McLay, Sam’s Club CEO, in a statement.
The nation’s largest retailer, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, plans to open the first Sam’s Club location in Florida next year as part of its expansion. Sam’s Club is also updating its distribution system. Sam’s Club plans to open five new supply chain fulfillment and distribution centers, the first of which will open in Georgia later this year.
The most recent new Sam’s Club opened in Hanover, Pennsylvania.
Sam’s Club has redesigned the majority of its 600 clubs in recent years, making them brighter and easier to navigate. Scan & Go, a mobile app that allows shoppers to scan merchandise and check out without going to the cashier line, is one example of how the brand has expanded its shopping technology.
Walmart announced earlier this week that it would raise the minimum starting wage for hourly employees in the United States to $14 per hour. In 2021, Sam’s Club has set a minimum wage of $15 per hour.
Sam’s Club in November, reduced the price of its hot dog-and-soda combo from $1.50 to $1.38 in order to provide a lot better deal than Costco‘s $1.50 combo.
For more than a year, Sam’s Club has seen double-digit same-store sales growth, excluding fuel costs. In the most recent quarter, which ended in late October, same-store sales increased 10%, or nearly 24%, year on year. Its membership revenue increased by 8%.
