Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, has always put the wellbeing of its customers and employees in the forefront. On Tuesday, the big box retailer announced a new change that will help both customers and employees who have sensory disabilities. The store is planning to create a calmer shopping experience in the morning hours from tomorrow.
On Tuesday, Walmart announced new changes in all its stores in the U.S. The changes that will start on Friday, November 10, include setting a static image in in-store TV walls. The radio will be turned off, and the lights will also be lowered.
Walmart had tested these changes in a pilot. The store implemented such changes during the back-to-school shopping period. The big box retailer found that neurodiverse individuals had benefited from these changes, and these individuals included both customers and store employees.
Walmart said that their stores will operate as a sensory-friendly space between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. local time. Stores will follow this time schedule seven days a week in all Walmart stores across the nation and in Puerto Rico. The giant retailer announced a start date for tomorrow but has not planned an end date for the implementation of its sensory-friendly changes.
Walmart had set special shopping hours in the morning for older and more vulnerable shoppers during the pandemic. This new sensory-friendly effort in the morning from tomorrow is bound to increase goodwill and might also increase footfalls. Customers who gain from these efforts might also spend more time at Walmart stores.
Walmart’s blog post said that they had taken the step of making shopping in Walmart stores “more inclusive for those with sensory disabilities” earlier in the year as they created “a less stimulating environment for a couple of hours each Saturday.”
Walmart’s blog post also said that they got “overwhelmingly positive” feedback about their pilot program. The post also noted that some may consider the changes that were made to be small, but these slight changes had “transformed the shopping experience” for others.
