A Virginia teacher who was critically injured when a 6-year-old student shot her is showing signs of improvement, according to the city’s mayor. Authorities struggle to understand how a young child could be involved in a school shooting.
On Friday afternoon, 25-year-old Abby Zwerner was shot in the chest by her six-year-old student, according to the Newport News police chief. The mayor, Phillip Jones, said the teacher’s condition is “trending in a positive direction” as she remains hospitalized.
Chief Steve Drew met with Zwerner and her family this morning and announced in a statement on Saturday afternoon that the boy had been arrested and she is improving. The first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News was rushed to the hospital on Friday with critical injuries after a 6-year-old boy shot her during an ‘altercation’ in the classroom. The child is still being held by the police.
According to the media, a parent, Sebastian Gonzalez-Hernandez, confirmed Zwerner’s identity and praised her for “screaming at her kids to run away” after the student was fired. Gonzalez-Hernandez stated that even after she was hit by the bullet, she was concerned about the safety of her children. The father of the 6-year-old said that she was a “fantastic teacher” and his son “adores her.” They were all devastated by what happened, and wished her a speedy recovery.
According to the grandmother of one of the students, a student brought ‘shiny gold bullets’ to school last week, but it is unclear if this is the same child who was arrested.
Meanwhile, gun violence experts say the shooting is a rare occurrence of a young child who brought a gun into school and wounded a teacher. Daniel W Webster, a Johns Hopkins University professor who studies gun violence, also had similar thoughts. However, he claims that his research shows that incidents of young children unintentionally shooting themselves or others in homes or other settings are on the rise.
Police Chief Steve Drew stated yesterday that the shooting did not appear to be an accident and was limited to a single victim. He stated that the student and teacher had met in a classroom setting. The boy had a handgun in the classroom and investigators were attempting to determine where he obtained it.
