The Virginia elementary school student who fatally shot his teacher was six years old. Prior to the shooting, on an earlier date, the boy reportedly threw furniture into the classroom, threatened to burn and kill another teacher, and barricaded one door, but school administrators ignored the staff’s concerns.
Communications between teachers and administrators at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News describe complaints made by staff members, including shot teacher Abigail Zwerner, The Washington Post reported.
On January 6, the boy entered the classroom with a gun and shot Abigail Zwerner once. She managed to live, but she had to recover in the hospital for three weeks. After three weeks, she was finally allowed to leave the hospital this week.
Superintendent George Parker III of Newport News received online messages from teachers stating that Zwerner had asked for assistance with the boy and expressed concerns about his behavior.
The teachers’ union told the outlet that the young student once wrote a teacher a note in which he expressed his hatred for her and his desire to kill her. According to the teacher, when she showed the disturbing letter to school officials, they advised her to drop it.
Another time, the student succeeded in barricading the doors to prevent the teacher and other students from leaving their classroom. Only after the teacher pounded on the door and a colleague across the hall succeeded in opening it were they able to escape.
Authorities claimed there was no struggle or forewarning before the boy pointed a 9mm Taurus handgun at his teacher and started shooting. However, at least one school official had been informed, according to Parker, that the boy might have brought a weapon to school before the shooting, but a search of his backpack turned up nothing.
In their first public statement since the shooting on Thursday, the parents said the gun had been “secured” from their home. The week of the shooting “was the first week when we were not in class with him,” they said, adding that the boy “suffers from an acute disability” and that at least one parent accompanied him to class every day.
Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew has stated that the shooting is being looked into as being “intentional.”
