On January 6, while sitting at a reading table in her classroom, Abby Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, was shot in the hand and chest. Since the incident, she has undergone four surgeries and spent almost two weeks in the hospital.
First-grade teacher in Virginia shot and critically injured by her 6-year-old student filed a lawsuit Monday seeking $40 million in damages from school officials, blamed them of gross negligence for allegedly disobeying numerous warnings on the day of the shooting that the boy had a gun and was in a “violent mood.”
The boy “had a history of random violence” at school and at home, including an incident the year before in which he “strangled and choked” his kindergarten teacher, according to the lawsuit filed by Zwerner’s attorneys.
No one has been brought to trial for the shooting, not even the boy. After the shooting, the school board dismissed the superintendent, but the assistant principal chose to leave. Newton is still working for the school district, according to a spokeswoman for the district, although she did not specify what position she occupies. The board also decided to buy clear bags for every kid and to put metal detectors in every school in the district, starting with Richneck.
The Newport News School Board, former Superintendent George Parker III, former Richneck Principal Briana Foster Newton, and former Richneck Assistant Principal Ebony Parker are also named as defendants in the case.
