According to a prosecutor, a grand jury in Virginia has charged Deja Taylor, the mother of a 6-year-old kid who shot his teacher on counts of child negligence and failing to lock up her weapon in the home. The Virginia Commonwealth Attorney announced Monday that the mother of a 6-year-old who shot his teacher in January has been charged with criminal child negligence.
Deja Taylor has also been charged with a misdemeanor after a Newport News Police Department investigation for carelessly placing a loaded weapon close to a child.
According to a lawyer for the family, Taylor bought the rifle and kept it locked with a trigger lock on the top shelf of her bedroom closet. The boy took the gun to school in his backpack, according to the authorities.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn said in a news release that a grand jury in Newport News had indicted the boy’s 25-year-old mother on charges of felony child negligence and a misdemeanor count of endangering a child by careless storage of a handgun.
In a lawsuit filed this month, Abigail Zwerner claims that despite worries over a gun being in the boy’s hands on the day of the killing, school authorities and the school board were aware of the student’s “history of random violence” and failed to take proactive action. Abby Zwerner, the 25-year-old teacher at Richneck Elementary School who was shot in the hand and the chest underwent four surgeries and spent nearly two weeks in the hospital.
The charges in the lawsuit brought against the youngster and the family, according to Ellenson, “should be taken with a large grain of salt.”
