Recently Australian media had reported that celebrity Kanye West would visit the continent as his partner Bianca Censori grew up in Melbourne. The rapper, who is known as Ye, had been planning to visit Australia to meet Bianca’s family. On Wednesday, a minister said that Ye could be denied entry into the country because of his antisemitic remarks.
Minister of Education Jason Clarke had not only condemned Kanye West’s antisemitic remarks but also said that people who pass such remarks have had their visa applications rejected. He believed that the rapper would also have to answer questions and undergo a similar process as others had in the past.
Peter Dutton, who is the opposition leader and a former immigration minister, also noted that he would have also been inclined to reject Ye’s entry to the country but said that it was a decision that the government should take.
Peter Wertheim, who is a co-chief executive officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, said that he had also met officials on Tuesday and asked for a ban on entry for the rapper.
Australia has a “good character” test and individuals, mainly of the far-right have been denied entry to the country for their views. Recent individuals who were denied entry include Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and conspiracy theorist David Icke.
The Proud Boys founder was denied a visa after there was a petition that protested his entry, in 2018. It gained over 81,000 signatures. British conspiracy theorist Icke’s visa was canceled in 2019.
Kanye West had gone on a tirade against the Jewish community, weeks ago. Following this, he expressed his liking for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, in an interview with right wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. He had also attended a dinner at Trump’s residence Mar-A-Lago with Neo Nazi Nick Fuentes, late last year that was widely covered by the media.
After his outbursts against the Jewish community, Kanye West lost his business partnerships with leading companies including Nike, Adidas, Balenciaga, GAP and more. Will Australia deny him a visa and ban his entry to their country remains to be seen. As of now, Ye’s representative has declined to comment on the matter.
