On Monday, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office reported that seven people were killed in a shooting spree that took place across two separate locations in Half Moon Bay on Monday afternoon.
In response to a shooting report, San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies reached the Magic Mushroom Farm in unincorporated San Mateo County at about 2:22 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered four victims who had been shot dead. A fifth victim was also shot and was taken with life-threatening injuries to Stanford Medical Center. A second shooting victim was transported to Stanford Medical Center with critical wounds.
According to the sheriff’s office, three additional shooting victims were discovered shortly after that one at another nursery located along the 2100 block of Cabrillo Highway South.
Chunli Zhao, a 67-year-old resident of Half Moon Bay, was named as the suspect by the authorities. He was discovered in his car in the parking lot of the sheriff’s office substation in Half Moon Bay at around 4:40 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office, and was taken into custody without incident. A semi-automatic handgun, believed to be the shooting weapon, was also found.
The shooting suspect drove himself to the substation situated between the two businesses, where he turned himself in to deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials also said that Zhao first killed three of his victims in the trailers where they lived next to the field where they worked, before killing two more there.
Authorities reported that the victims were all thought to be employees. It is still unclear how the two businesses might be related at the time. Sheriff Christina Corpus of San Mateo County stated that Zhao is thought to have acted alone. There was no immediate information on the shooting spree’s motivation, and it seems to to be “an instance of workplace violence.”
The shootings in Half Moon Bay follow a weekend shooting incident that claimed 11 lives at a dance studio in Southern California’s Monterey Park. The incident took place while the Asian American community’s Lunar New Year celebrations were going on, and the victims’ ages were reported to be between from 57 and 76 years.
