On Sunday, a group of gunmen attacked a prison in Ciudad Juarez, a city in northern Mexico. According to the Chihuahua state prosecutors’ office, 14 people were killed in the attack, including 10 prison guards and security agents.
According to Agence France-Presse, the attack also injured four people (AFP). The attack occurred around 7 a.m., while inmates’ families were waiting to see their relatives for the New Year’s holiday.
Prior to the attack, armed men opened fire on municipal police on a nearby boulevard, sparking a car chase that resulted in the arrest of four men and the seizure of their vehicle, according to prosecutors.
According to prosecutors, the purpose of the attack was to allow certain groups of prisoners to escape, but the investigation is still ongoing. They also stated that four people were detained, but did not specify whether they were inmates or assailants. Details about how the inmates managed to escape were also withheld.
Members of the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels have been imprisoned in Ciudad Juarez for years in a turf war that has resulted in the deaths of over 5,000 people. The Sinaloa cartel “won” the turf war in the end. Prosecutors reported that fighting within the prison around the same time as the attack injured 13 people.
