The trial that began on August 10th in Los Angeles county has made shocking revelations regarding what happened following the helicopter crash in January 2020 that claimed the lives of NBA superstar and 13-year-old Gianna Bryant, as well as the other seven passengers. The jury awarded Vanessa $10 million and Chris a total of $9 million from the LASD. While the LAFD must give the couple $6 million apiece.A Los Angeles jury has decided to award Vanessa Bryant and Chris Chester a combined $31 million.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and Fire Department (LAFD) did release images of the bodies of Bryant and Chris’ loved ones, which the jury said violated their privacy and led to emotional distress. The jury’s decision was made late Wednesday afternoon.
This case was brought to trial by Vanessa Bryant after she filed a complaint accusing employees of the county sheriff’s office and the fire department of taking and sharing gratuitous pictures of human remains from the crash scene while using their personal phones without a valid business cause.
Mira Hashmall, partner at Miller Barondess law firm and the lead outside counsel for the county told People Magazine that they thanked the jury for its hard work. “While we disagree with the jury’s findings as to the county’s liability, we believe the monetary award shows that jurors didn’t believe the evidence supported the plaintiffs’ requests for $75 million for emotional distress,” “We will be discussing next steps with our client,” she said. “Meanwhile, we hope the Bryant and Chester families continue to heal from their tragic loss.”
