G2 Esports completed its stunning run through the lower bracket to the Valorant Champions Tour Americas Stage 1 championship, beating Sentinels 3-1 Sunday in the grand final in Los Angeles.
The win gives G2 two titles and a runner-up finish through three events so far in the Champions Tour season. They won the Americas Kickoff in February — beating Sentinels in the final in that event, as well — then lost 3-2 to T1 in the Masters Bangkok in March.
On Sunday, G2 jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, winning on Haven and Split, each by a 13-9 score. Sentinels held off defeat with a 13-10 win on Pearl but G2 closed out the match with a 13-10 win on Ascent.
Trent “trent’ Cairns led all players with 73 kills and a plus-22 kill/death/assist ratio, taking home MVP honors. Jacob “valyn” Batio was the only other player on either team with a double-digit ratio, posting a 70/60/20 plus-10.
The win gave G2 10 Americas Points as they increased their lead over Sentinels in the Americas Standings to seven (16-9). The top two teams in each region (Americas, China and EMEA — Europe, the Middle East and Africa) advance to the world championship tournament in Paris beginning in September.
Additionally, the top three finishers in the tournament qualified for the Masters Toronto scheduled for June. MIBR, who fell to G2 in the lower bracket final on Saturday, is the third qualifier.
After finishing group play 5-0, G2 fell to Sentinels in their first tournament game on April 26. They then went 4-0 from there, including a 3-0 run this weekend.
