Utah-based online marketplace Jane collapsed recently before Black Friday, leaving hundreds of small businesses in the lurch as it suddenly shut down its site on November 17. Many sellers said that they were owed tens of thousands of dollars, and a few were owed more than a hundred thousand dollars each, according to a popular outlet. Many sellers have said that they feel betrayed by the Utah-based platform, as they have been using the site for 12 years.
Commercial website Jane targeted female consumers and offered merchandise from small business. It owes these sellers more than $10.1 million in sales, according to documents signed by the last CEO of the platform and published by DSI Assignments, according to reports from multiple outlets including NBC.
DSI Assignments is a company that helps businesses liquidate assets owned by them that are used to repay a company’s creditors. It is an alternative to declaring bankruptcy. Documents from DSI Assignments indicate that each one of the 13 sellers on the website Jane is owed $100,000 or more.
Documents from DSI also noted that online site Jane employed more than 90 people and owed more than 1,300 sellers money when it shut down.
Megan and Michael Ewan founded Jane in 2011. The Utah-based platform allowed sellers to list their merchandise on its marketplace. Items included women’s and children’s clothes, home decor, and customized goods. Flash sales were offered to customers.
In its early days, former sellers said that the Utah-based marketplace created a boutique atmosphere that helped buyers and sellers.
There had been danger signs for sellers as the payment cycle on the online marketplace became longer. They were given reasons such as employee absenteeism and others. Online marketplace Jane had offices in Utah, and some sellers contacted the authorities, but the company was registered in Delaware.
In a press release on Wednesday, December 6 DSI Assignments reported that it will conduct an auction sale of intellectual property of Jane LLC. Bids have to be submitted before or on January 15, 2024.
