US war hero and NFL player Pat Tillman’s mother recently expressed shock that the prestigious memorial award in honor of her legendary son would be awarded to Prince Harry.

Many web fans are disappointed with ESPN for choosing Prince Harry to receive the Pat Tillman Award at the ESPYs in Hollywood next month. A petition has been launched asking the sports network to rethink their decision.

Mary Tillman spoke to the Daily Mail after Prince Harry was chosen to receive the award named after Pat Tillman. She said, “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.”

She also said that she thought many other individuals were more “worthy” of the award. She noted that there were “unsung heroes” who would use the money to uplift society and more.

ESPN annually gives the Pat Tillman Award to someone who has served others in a manner that embodies Pat Tillman’s legacy. The award was constituted in his memory, but it appears that ESPN did not consult his mother before naming this year’s recipient.

A petition has also been submitted to ESPN. It says that Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, was “involved in controversies that call into question his suitability to receive an honor of this magnitude.”

Pat Tillman was a successful NFL player who left a lucrative football career to serve in the military. He was deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2004, he was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan.

In 2023, Buffalo Bills training staff received the Pat Tillman award for saving the life of Damar Hamlin. He went into cardiac arrest while on the football field and was saved by the team’s heroic efforts.

Prince Harry named the recipient for 2024, founded the Invictus Games for war veterans. Wounded and injured veterans from many countries compete in these games. Prince Harry also served two tours in Afghanistan.

Prince Harry is also a controversial figure, and many web fans, including Pat McAfee and Mary Tillman, seem to be unimpressed by him and think there are better recipients for the Pat Tillman award.
