Two Deputy United States Marshals shot at a teen who attempted to carjack one of their unmarked vehicles. The incident occurred near a Supreme Court Judge’s Sonia Sotomayor home in Washington, DC.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is investigating the shooting. The teen is expected to survive.
The MPD said the Marshals were inside a car parked in the 2100 block of 11th Street, Northwest, at 1:15 a.m. A person exited the vehicle and approached one of the marshals.
He pointed a gun and tried to carjack the unmarked vehicle. The Deputy Marshal fired a few shots at him with his service weapon, and so did another Deputy Marshal, who was in another car.
The suspect was taken to an area hospital. He is being treated and is expected to survive. Both the marshals remain uninjured in the attempted carjack. The suspect has been identified as Kentrell Flowers, 18.
The 18-year-old suspect has been charged with armed carjacking and carrying a pistol without a license.
He is also charged with possession of a large-capacity ammunition feed device. A firearm was recovered from the scene.
Abigail Meyer, a spokesperson for the US Marshals Service, released a statement to The Hill. It read, “The Deputy US Marshals involved in the shooting incident were part of the unit protecting the residences of U.S. Supreme Court justices. As a general practice, the US Marshals don’t discuss specifics of protective details.”
Persons with guns have targeted Supreme Court justices and other federal agency officials in the past. However, this incident doesn’t seem to have targeted a federal official or a U.S. Marshal.
Although investigations are ongoing, the shooting incident appears to be an attempted carjacking and not a targeted attempt at a government official.
